About the M113A2 Desert Version
The production of the M113A2 began in June 1979. Based on combat experience in Vietnam, this version was made with improved transmission, operating equipment, cooling systems, and reinforced suspension. Detachable fuel tanks were moved to the rear, external sides of the vehicle for the protection of passengers and crew. Smoke dischargers were mounted on the front sides of the vehicle, and the trimbane was enlarged. Evan after the introduction of the M113's successor, the M3 Bradley, production of the M113A2 continued. M113A2 units were deployed to the Gulf War in 1991, and later in the war with Iraq in 2003. Approximately a half-century after its inception, the M113 continues to be used and improved upon, a testament to its superior performance and timeless design.
