The P-51D Mustang was the primary US fighter of WWII. Developed in a remarkable time of 117 days in response to a request from the British for a more advanced fighter, the early Mustangs were were powered by an Allison engine with a limited high altitude performance. The Allison engine was later replaced with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, where it proved itself excellent as a long-range bomber escort. The D-model is identified by its bubble canopy. The P-51D remained in active service after the war until the early 1950s.
