Commissioned in 1936, the Messerschmitt Bf109 was the most advanced fighter in the world for its time. The design was continually improved with the first E versions being introduced at the start of WWII. Further improvements as suggested by combat experienced pilots included a revised cockpit canopy, ability to carry a 300L fuel tank beneath the fuselage and an upgraded engine. The aircraft saw extensive service in Europe, the Battle of Britain and in the North African campaigns until it was replaced by the newer F version and the Focke Wulf 190 from 1942 onwards.
