The La-5FN, with production numbers running to nearly 10,000 units, joined the war effort for the first time at the end of 1942 with the battle of Stalingrad. The gradually improved versions served up to the end of the war as hunter and fighter-bomber roles. The further advancement to the interceptor class led to the development of the La-7 with the same engine, but increased efficiency, which was achieved by aerodynamic improvements and lighter weight. The production of the La-7 amounted to over 550 units.
