The development of the Mirage III was prompted by the French Air Force and its pressing need for a multi-purpose fighter aircraft. The first prototype was seen in the skies on November 17, 1956. The second fighter squadron was quickly chosen to fly the Mirage IIIC, a Mach 2 all weather interceptor capable of support missions. The last aircraft in service in the French Airforce were withdrawn in June 1988. The Mirage IIIC was also used by South Africa, Israel and Switzerland.
